Children's Magic

Children's entertaining is one area of magic available to us all - whether you are a parent performing to your child at a birthday party, or a professional magician hoping to expand your repertoire, children's entertaining is a rewarding and enjoyable branch of magic.

Kid's magic is very different from close-up magic or sleight of hand - it is nearer to stage magic, with visual illusions to keep your audience attentive.

When planning your children's magic shows, it is essential to bear in mind that children have a relatively small attention span, so you need to keep them on their toes by using visual props (such as magic wands, colourful tricks etc.), funny jokes and a lot of audience participation. The magic illusions should be varied, exciting and most importantly, entertaining for the children.

The tricks you choose for the magic show are very important - you should pick tricks for children that are suitable for their age and sex. A patter about football wouldn't go down too well at an all-girls birthday party!

Before you perform a show, watch a little children's television and see how the presenters act. They smile, laugh and appear to be enjoying themselves - a very important part of being successful! Try to also remember some of the characters names - you can (temporarily) rename your pet rabbit to a 'Teletubby', for example.

To be (almost) as successful as famous magicians, you need to enjoy performing magic, the kids will know you are enjoying it, and your positive feelings will help to make them enjoy your magic show - there's nothing worse than watching magic performed by a bored magician!

Improve your chances of repeat performances by rewarding the children with merchandise. A skilfully crafted balloon model is great, but once it pops, you're forgotten. If you can afford some promotional material with your contact details to give to the children along with the balloon, then the parents will have a way of calling you for their child's next party.

To sum up, try to create a fast-paced, varied and exciting magic show to keep the children entertained. Reward participation with merchandise, and word of mouth will be your main source of income.

Thanks, I always like doing magic shows for children better than for adults, they are less questioning, they just think that you are simply... "Magic"

Before you appear as the magician, make sure the party hostess send all the kids to the toilet. I used not to know how excited kids can sometimes get and I once found my assistant standing in a mini flood!

I did a card change followed by car-to-wallet and the kids were astounded so I really do thinks card trick are ok with children. You just have to be careful which one's you do -Have them draw pictures on the card rather than signing it (They WILL forget the card) -Do lots of colour changes -Use Jumbo cards

There are rare exceptions, but card tricks are usually not good for children. Kids can't remember cards as well as adults and don't find them nearly as interesting. Also, many churches don't approve of card tricks due to their gambling references.

Generally, the best card tricks for children are not ones that use playing cards. There are plenty of topical packs of cards that are child oriented that have letters, numbers or common pictures that most children will recognize. Just look around the toy sections of dollar/pound stores to get an idea of what is popular and create your magic around that. Rising cards, colour changing cards, find a card, etc. all work well with these 'kid' packs. If you want to use some fanning powder, you can even perform some fancy sleight of hand, if that is your talent, but keep it short for children would rather be involved in the magic than just have to sit still and watch it! Over 50 years of entertaining children had taught me a lot.

Thanks for the advice. Also I remember to keep away your animals from the kids after doing tricks with it because children are easily attracted to them that they might ruin one of your tricks.

if you are working with riley and excited children and one of them asks to hold your bunny, DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON THEM!!!!!!!!! i had a bunny that i let a kid hold, then i started talking to the parents, and the little brat let him out of the yard, then he got run over by a truck, and fluffers is no more:(

also, if you are working with animals, remember to always use an area with closed doors/gates, etc.

Some card tricks are ok, but keep it simple. For example, color changing decks. Don't make it a habit though, keep magic for the kids super visual. I like to make snow for the kids, or make water vanish, balloon tricks, candy productions, etc. Think like a kid. What would you want to see if you were 6 again?

It all depends what card tricks you do - you can't expect young kids to know the difference between a 4 of spades and a 8 of clubs really.

The youngest of kids wouldn't necessarily find a colour changing deck too effective either - they wouldn't know it's not normal...

a suggestion- use a blank deck. Kids can draw an animal or something in bright market , and it's the only card with writing on it. Perfect for kids, and also ambitious card with adults. Keep in mind, I don't do much kid's stuff. Choose your audiences.

Also, I'd like to make a quick point. Performing at a children's show can be tough, and it is certainly NOT for everyone. You have to know how to effectively get on their level, and this varies from age group to group. You MUST be have a wonderful, immediate rapport and connection to the children, or they will EAT YOU UP! And mostly, at least in my opinion, when dealing with children, you CANNOT take yourself too seriously! It's about having fun with them, not being all super dramatic and mystical. Engage them, get them invloved in group stuff like counting to 3 or saying a silly magic word, and also put magic in their hands or right under their noses as often as possible!
