Misdirection

Misdirection is the art of distracting the audience while you perform your 'secret move' without being spotted. Some think it is more important to get 100% correct than your patter. After all, if you can misdirect well enough, your trick can go completely wrong and the audience will never know!

It is essential to 'control' your audience's thoughts and eyes - you should not give them the opportunity to think "how does he do that" or to see your subtle move.

This is easily accomplished on stage with careful use of lighting, props, assistants and pyrotechnics. However, for the majority of us, we need to use misdirection when standing less than a metre away from the audience.

You can control the audience with a wide range of techniques. Start by positioning them in a suitable place. This is especially important in tricks where angles are important, such as the Balducci Levitation. Once they are in a suitable position, you can start concentrating on the more subtle forms of misdirection.

Eye contact is essential - you should always monitor your audience - sustain eye contact while you are doing 'your move' (so you can execute your move with perfect timing, knowing that they are looking at your eyes). If you believe someone may see your move, make a larger move with another part of your body - you may cough, itch your face, wave your magic wand, put something on the table... the list is endless.

You can also misdirect the audience by allowing time from the 'secret move' to the point where the audience is made aware that something has happened. This is perfectly demonstrated in the Cross Cut Force

It is possible to develop your routine to include the necessary distractions. Try to think of what would naturally be done at the time when you need to misdirect. It would be stupid to toss a coin when doing a card manoeuvre, but tossing a coin would be natural if you are in the middle of a coin routine. Once mastered, your routine should leave the audience entertained by the magic you have just performed, and the fact that they don’t know how it is done leaves them mystified, thinking about your performance, and possibly, your next performance!

one never will never emphazise enough the fact that for any routine, one manipulate more the mind of the audiance than the cards. Mastering a sleight is useless without the proper psychological manipulation (misdirection, climax, persuasion). unfortunately, i guess there's nio way to get charisma, if you don't have.

I have next to no charisma, and I started doing magic(week ago)just because I thought this could be perfect way to learn charisma. So I really hope that you're wrong kaneka. But anyway, I believe that anything is just about learning and adapting. The facts that some learn some things before others and it's hard to re-learn stuff are no way going to prevent me from being master magician.

when i started doing magic i had a huge problem with misdirection and i think the reason is because i started out by doing tricks that needed it. honestly, i believe that if you start off with tricks that dont need it and just try misdirection for the hell of it doing different things to see what works first.

A good technique for misdirection is to explain to them how the trick is going go and use one of your hands to imitate what your going to do while your other hand is actually doing the slaight etc.

I always misdirect by saying how cool the trick is and how excited I was when I saw and learned it.

when doing it for my friends i make a really obvious with one hand whilst doing the real sleight with the other. this way they think theve caught me and they are even more amazed when the trick is completed! the other way is to pretend the trick hasnt worked so that they all lose concentration for a a split second

Usually I do a trick where it needs misdirection for only a little bit. I just usually annoy them with: Are you sure you want this card?.....Once I start this trick you can't change your card.........100% sure you want this card? Then, if they look at my eyes, I do the sleight. Mos of the time when they get annoyed, they look up and stare at me like I'm stupid for some time.

Some misdirection techniques I use are: 1. Are you sure you remember your card? 2. Please write the identity of your card on this small sheet of paper. 3. Do you know any card tricks? 4. I was watching a performer on tv yesterday and he ..... 5. Please show your card to everybody.

I do the Copperfield trick where you ask the audience to stand, stick both arms out, point their thumbs up then turn them down, then put their right hand over their left hand. I then use my right hand to point to an audinece member to my left and say "no, put your right hand over your left." At that moment I reverse my left hand. The misdirection is strong than if you point to someone to your right in the audience.

Another great subtle way to misdirect someone is to simply take a half step back and standing up tall while talking and looking at them.
